Day 8 - Loch Lomond, Grasmere, Lake Windermere

Despite very rainy (and windy) weather, we opted for two boats trips today. Probably would have been better if we could have sat outside on the boats, but the scenery was lovely. The first boat trip of the day was Loch Lomond. We had a lovely Scottish lad on the boat serve us hot tea. Not a bad way to start the day.

The top picture was from the Loch Lomond boat trip. On the right you can see Honeymoon Isle. It was said that newly married couples were put on the island for a week, with hardly anything and if they survived and were still speaking to each other, their marriage would be successful.

We had a short stop at Gretna Green today but it was raining so hard, we went straight to the store. Did a little shopping, got some snacks and went back to the bus. Apparently young couples would go to Gretna Green because you could get married younger in Scotland than you could in England. Basically the Vegas of Scotland. No pictures, but we got some great deals!

The second picture was from Grasmere. Two tour buses showed up at the same time so we spent most of the time there waiting in line for lunch. We walked around a little but when our pants were soaked up to our knees, we decided to call it a day. There were some Wordsworth related sights, but our literary interest has its limits. We had driven through near-flooding countryside, and the area was closed due to flooding by the next day. Apparently the decks in shown in the picture are usually several feet above the water.

Our last stop of the day was a boat ride on Lake Windermere followed by a steam train ride (bottom picture). The theme of the day was rain, so we didn't even bother getting the cameras out on Windermere. It, too, was lovely and we enjoyed just taking in the scenery. To get back to the bus, we took a ride on a steam train. Nostalgia might have its limits...we would have preferred a heated train at that point! Another day done, it is off to Lancashire for the evening.
